Here’s your chance to paint any subject you would like while making your paintings looser, more colorful, and more expressive.  Loose is a determined look - lyrical and spontaneous!  Paint landscape, still life, figure or any subject of your choice, working from your own references or from photos and objects I’ll provide each session. I’ll begin each class with a 20-30 minute demonstration. Each session we’ll talk about process, technique, composition, form, light and accuracy. What do you leave in? What do you take out?  What kinds of brushstrokes, edges, light, color, drawing, and relationships do you want in your paintings?  I‘ll generously share my knowledge of painting in each class with gentle feedback to students as a group and individually.  All media and skill levels are welcome!  Feel free to call me with any questions about this class. Studio: 941-924-9889

PLEIN AIR PAINTING CLASS (OUTDOOR)

January 8 - February 12, 2019

All Skill Levels

Oil, Acrylic, Aqua Oil

$185m/215nm

SUPPLY LIST

Out door painting provides a fresh and different way of looking at how we process what we see.  Joseph will help each student gain confidence, speed and skill in painting plein air, demonstrating how to see the basic shapes, composition and values in your scenes. He can show you how to select a view, make objects appear three dimensional and create the illusion of distance between them up close and afar.  He personally  chooses to creatively interpret what he sees not copy it.  The first lesson will be at the Art Center with a brief demonstration, checkout of equipment and supplies, followed by each student painting a brief trial run landscape on the art center grounds.  Subsequent sessions will be outdoor locations such as local parks.  Students will supply a small portable easel (or paint on your lap) with a limited palette. The key to painting plein air is keeping things simple.  You will be given a list of painting locations with directions to get to each.

Call Joseph with any questions studio 941-924-9889.

How do you develop a landscape painting that is dynamic, energized and exciting to look at?  Brushstrokes can denote action, drama and mood. Go for a loaded brush for juicy expressive paint while still making a dynamic composition with dramatic light and interesting shapes.

This is an easy going, casual class for all levels of painters. I teach with patience, good humor, and boundless encouragement to help free you up to do your most expressive and creative work.

My daily kickoff demos (usually about 30 minutes of painting, chatting, and sharing tips) will be in acrylic but will apply to all mediums. Questions and comments are welcome at any time. You will have plenty of time to paint.  Each day will include a general class critique as well as individual guidance (always gentle and instructional).  Use your own references or the ones I’ll supply. I keep no secrets and will share my knowledge of painting in each class.  If you use acrylics, I highly recommend you use a Masterson Wet Palette. Feel free to call me with any questions about this class.  studio 941-924-9889

Start a visual journal of your sightings, thoughts or ideas or moments in your life.  When sketching one looks at things far more intently bonding the feelings generated with the drawing making it a permanent memory or a starting place for creative things to happen.  We live in a 3-D world and sketching teaches us to see and express it in two dimensions.  I've used my tiny water color kit and filled sketchbooks for years on trips to Maine, Cape Cod, New York, Washington, Texas, California, England, Italy, Greece, and sailing the Grenadines.  Artists have done this for hundreds of years.  Here’s your chance to join that tradition.  I’ll show my sketchbooks and share some procedures on getting started. Go easy on yourself and I’ll gently help guide you. Remember these are quick sketches you don’t labor over.  Time and repetition hones skills.  We will sketch in and around the Art Center and practice at home in between.

SUPPLY LIST

Do you ever find yourself painting endless details and still end up with a composition that doesn't work... or the shapes are uninteresting and the values are off... or you just don’t like it?  That's where development paintings come into play.  They are small, brief and bold.  The key is to work in a series developing ideas without wasting time on details.  I work on 5x7 or 6x8 panels or heavy bristol paper.  With a timer set for 7 minutes or 10 at the most on each sketch.  Anything longer is defeating the purpose. These can be done from photos or direct viewing of the scene.   Work in acrylic from B&W photos then invent the color.  Which means narrowing the colors down to two or three plus white.  Small color sketches build enormous confidence and help eliminate the fear of errors when making a larger painting.  This is a fun and effective method to gain important skills in painting. The idea is to be bold and willing to do several of the same general subject varying the composition and colors.  You can eliminate the fear of trying new ideas because so little time is invested.  I will do a couple of timed demos so you can get a good laugh and then coach you through the process and give valuable tips and feedback.

 About the Instructor:

imageJoseph Melançon MFA, NWS

Joseph Melançon is a versatile artist whose range of work includes watercolor, acrylic and oil painting as well as collage and sculpture. In his work he interprets lifelong interests such as antique toys, the American Indian, landscape and the figure using abstraction as well as expressive realism. Joseph's works are very personal with a passion for process, composition and the painterly surface. In painting he dissects, simplifies and freely interprets what he sees and feels through the use of composition, shapes, line and color.

Joseph, who holds an MFA degree, taught for many years at Eastfield College in Dallas and Texas Woman’s University in addition to giving workshops and Lecture/Demos across the US.  Joseph’s design and dimensional production work as curator of exhibits in two science and history museums and his years of building sets and props for television, print media, and industry contributed greatly to Joseph’s extensive knowledge of methods and materials.
