Opening Reception October 18 5-7 pm

Gallery 1 &2: For the Love of Art

For the Love of Art is an exhibition comprised of four of the 2010 Florida Division of Cultural Affairs Individual Artist Fellowship Recipients. The artists were chosen to receive this award based on the artistic and cultural merits of their artwork, and Art Center Sarasota has chosen to highlight these artists in a specially curated exhibition. The four artists selected for this show are Carrie Ann Baade, Anja Marais, Babs Reingold, and Nan Smith. These artists, all women, produce artwork of varying media: ceramic, painting, installation, drawing, and performance. Much of the work included in this exhibit contemplates the notion of women and what it means to be one. Some of the themes touched upon include personal identity, home life, memory and family, and the role that women have played in historical mythology. This exhibition was curated by Emma Thurgood, the Art Center’s Exhibition Coordinator.

Gallery 3 (Dec 20—Jan 18): ACS Instructors Exhibit

This exhibit is a sampling of the talented artist instructors working and teaching in Sarasota. All of the artists on display teach classes or workshops at the Art Center alongside having a working studio practice.  More information on the classes offered by Art Center Sarasota and these instructors can be found at  www.artsarasota.org

Gallery 3 (Jan 25—Feb15): ASALH Black Muse 2013

The annual exhibit of the artists of the Sarasota chapter of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, titled Black Muse, investigates the different art practices of African American artists in the Sarasota area. This exhibition is co-curated by Barbara Mask and Emma Thurgood.

Jurors’ Statement

First and foremost, to those reading this please remember that jurors are not the ultimate judges of your work, you are.  Rejoice in your individual and unique vision, and from one artist to another artist, thank you for sharing.

A variety of media abundant in diverse concepts, approaches and techniques were presented. Entries which demonstrated some celebration of subject, some strong integrity of purpose and solid craftsmanship were considered for acceptance.

While walking around the gallery space and looking at each work, we continually asked ourselves numerous questions.  Particularly, we asked which works contained the best balance of technical skill, presentation, and concept that would encourage, challenge, influence, and communicate with the viewer.

A considerable number of works submitted for consideration were great works that we would have loved to jury into the show, however with limited space and trying to balance the variety of mediums, many quality works were eliminated, and the decisions we had to make were hard.

We would like to thank the all of the staff and volunteers of the Art Center for their hard work and hours of dedication to make this show possible.  It was a pleasure to jury this show and to deliver our opinions for this wonderful exhibit.  Again, thank you to all the artists for your participation.
