The fundamentals of art criticism class will cover the theoretical foundations of some of this country’s most important art movements. These include postmodernism, abstract expressionism, relational aesthetics, and queer theory, and will deal with questions surrounding media like painting, photography, cinema, and the Internet. By identifying texts that influenced influential artist, this art criticism class allows for study in theories pertinent to various media, and may illuminate aspects of a practicing artist’s work in new ways.

About the Instructor: 

imageTom Winchester holds an MFA in Art Criticism and a BFA in Photography from School of Visual Arts. His criticism has appeared in The Miami Rail, Hyperallergic, and M/E/A/N/I/N/G Online #5, and his photography has been published in magazines like Inked, XLR8R, and NYLON. He currently teaches in the Photography and Imaging Department at Ringing College of Art and Design.
