JUROR’S STATEMENT

I am honored to have been chosen juror for Art Center Sarasota’s 2018 Florida’s Finest Statewide Juried Exhibition. Being new to the area I had a lot to learn about the Sarasota and broader arts community. In that short time I have come to realize the significance that Art Center Sarasota plays within this community. It is one of the premier arts organizations in the region. It has expansive and beautiful exhibition spaces, wonderfully curated and juried member exhibitions, as well as it is an artist incubator and hangout. It is a place to gather, to share ideas and explore creativity in all forms. I'd like to thank Lisa Berger, Dustin Juengel, Sarah Valdez and the rest of the staff for all their hard work and effort in putting this exhibition together.

As juror this was no easy task. I'd like to thank all the artists that submitted over three hundred and seventy art works for review. The works ranged greatly in size and scale, material and medium, content and context. The task was daunting and exhausting to say the least. My philosophy was to be open and choose works in a variety of medium including works that may be traditionally considered “craft” as I don’t care for those distinctions. I was very conscious to be inclusive and not to choose artists that create work only similar to mine. Deep down I think I’m a formalist and the underlying criteria was formal concerns as well as attention to craft, no matter what the medium. It was very difficult to narrow down the field and as space constraints became apparent, I eventually had to narrow that field further, an even more daunting task. For the artists or art works that were not selected, I apologize; please do not be discouraged, the numbers were just too much. For those included in the 2018 Florida’s Finest Juried Exhibition I can only say, congratulations.
