JUROR’S STATEMENT

Having the opportunity to judge the broad selection of artwork submitted by the Art Center members was an honor and pleasure that held a great surprise. The criterion by which I selected the works was skill, craftsmanship, and originality. The winners’ work spoke for itself and spoke loudly. What was more difficult however, was eliminating pieces from the show, because art is so personal and everyone is at a different stage in their artistic journey.

The rich variety of expression reflected in the show illustrates how Sarasota and the Art Center has been a hub of artistic immersion and creativity for decades. It is an important part of what makes our area such a great place to live and I commend each and every one of you who submitted your work. The surprise was in learning that the second place winner was only 16 years old. It will be interesting to follow her career in the years to come.

Thanks to Lisa Berger for asking me to judge the show, and to Danielle Dygert, and all the staff and volunteers for helping to make this a wonderful experience.
