ON VIEW MARCH 14 - APRIL 20, 2024

Michael Kinsey's upcoming exhibition, Views from the New Horizon, features an intimate selection of portraits of the interviewees from the "Listening to Black Voices" series by Heather Dunhill of Sarasota Magazine. The show highlights the richness and diversity of Sarasota’s Black community and, through the power of Kinsey’s lens, introduces the viewer to dozens of exceptional individuals who call our city home.

Heather Dunhill’s “Listening to Black Voices” interview series

For nearly four years, Heather Dunhill’s “Listening to Black Voices” interview series has documented the rich lives and stories of Sarasota’s important Black community. The focus of these interviews is illuminating the Black experience, including frank discussions on race and racism. Dunhill has chronicled more than 50 oral histories of civil rights leaders, legendary journalists, dynamic entrepreneurs, and experts in fields like education, health care science and business.

“I am indebted to those who have trusted me with their stories, and I consider myself a steward of these oral histories. I carry them in my heart.”
- Heather Dunhill

Michael Kinsey: Artist Statement

At the core of the human condition is a basic desire to receive and give love. We go through life doing things that we hope will ultimately bring us back to the basic feeling of acceptance, understanding, and whatever we perceive love to be. The path of the creative is to express something that not only evokes feeling but causes connection with others, even if it’s only on the most basic level.

In working on this series with Heather Dunhill, I never had the luxury of connecting with her words before I photographed the subject. I wasn’t always aware of the tone her words would carry. But I create images that, upon looking at the expression of my subject, might make people want to know more. I am grateful for the time people gave and how important they felt the work was. My work on “Listening to Black Voices” has simply tried to echo the message of Black people since the civil rights movement. I’ve tried to say with every photo, “We are here. See us for who we are.” And I believe my work, as a collective, mirrors the core of that human condition. We are all people seeking connection—trying and learning to receive and give love.
