Camp Overview  

Each week campers will be lead by the teacher in projects related to the theme of the week using various mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture and collage.  Campers will learn and practice basic art skills such as color mixing, painting with artist paintbrushes and drawing with pencil, marker, pastel and more.  Creative Kids Summer Art Camp is for campers of all skill levels and accomplishments.  The teachers are skilled at adapting projects and working with variety of skill levels and dexterities.  All work done during the week will be kept at camp until Friday when campers will have a presentation for their parents at 2pm on Friday.

Week 1: June 9 - 13 "Where in the World?"

Campers will travel around the globe and explore distant lands and a variety of cultures through their art work.  They will work on a variety of projects that reflect the cultures of the world and the diversity that resides on our planet. Join us this week for a worldly adventure.

Week 2: June 16 - 20 "Creative Strokes"

What makes an artist an artist?  In this fun filled week campers will learn a little art history while creating art in the style of famous artists from around the world.  Campers will explore the waterlilies with Monet or ride the great wave with Hokusai.  A variety of techniques will be presented for experimentation to create individual and unique masterpieces.

Week 3: June 23-27 "Sticks & Stones"

We love nature!  If you agree this is the week for you.  Campers will find inspiration and even supplies for this week out in nature.  Short walks morning and a tour of the Sarasota Garden Club right next door to the Art Center will begin each day.  Weather permitting.  Outdoor painting, rock art, mobiles and more will be created in this nature themed week.

Week 4: June 30 - July 4 "Eyeball This!"

Explore the amazing world of three-dimensional art and optical art.  Campers will produce a variety of drawings, paintings and sculptures using perspective, illusion and bold color.  Projects focusing on line and shape will create art with cool dramatic and eye catching effects. Campers will play with concepts that modern artists employ every day in their own work.

Week 5: July 7 - 11 "From the Sky to the Ocean"

What an amazingly diverse world we live in!  There are so many wonderful creatures who we share our planet with and scientists are discovering more everyday.  This week is all about those amazing creatures.  Campers will explore the Sky, the Land, and the Ocean creating art the celebrates the amazing creatures we live with and maybe discovering a few new creatures on the way.

Week 6: July 14-18 "Everything Paper"

Have fun with a week where we focus on paper.  Paper is part of our everyday lives but you would be surprised what you can do with it.  More than just something to write or print on, paper is a great medium for sculpture, collage, weaving, and more.  This week will explore the many ways that we can use paper to create art that will amaze and astound.

Week 7: July 21-25 "Trio of Color"

This week we will focus on the work of three artists known for big bold color and movement. Campers will explore and create bright mobiles and the kinetic art inspired by Alexander Calder, paintings, drawings, and prints by Pablo Picasso and the dynamic colors and shapes in collage like Henri Matisse.  This is a week where art history will come alive through the art of these influential modern artists.

Week 8: July 28 - August 1 "Creature Feature"

Monsters, aliens, dinosaurs oh my!  Explore the hidden or not so hidden worlds of your favorite creatures (magical, mythical, and more).  Imaginations will be charged by this interactive and out of this world excision into everything creature.  Campers will create creatures, worlds, and stories that will amaze and astound.  A perfect week for your little monsters to play with art.

Week 9: August 4 - 8 "All Mixed Up"

Artwork comes in many shapes and sizes but there are also a wide variety of mediums.  This week, campers will explore many art making methods both traditional and modern.   Highlights include watercolor, collage, mosaics, clay, printmaking and more!   No two pieces will look the same when campers get “All Mixed Up”.  See what great art  can be made with a piece of this and a bit of that.

Week 10: August 11 -15 "Creative Craniums"

Yay! Brains on ART! Don’t strain your brain get those crazy ideas out!  This is a fun filled week focusing on imagination and creative projects.  Campers will experiment and use their imaginations to create art using recycled materials, non-traditional art supplies and more.  This is a week where imaginations will soar.  The perfect kind of art activities to end the summer on.

Clay Days with Carla's Clay

Carla O'Brian from Carla's Clay will be teaching a half day of camp four weeks this summer.  Campers will learn hand-building techniques: pintching, extruding, and slabbing clay.  The clay pieces they create will be fired and painted or underglazed that week of camp.  Instuction will be done at the Art Center and is a special treat for the weeks that she is teaching.  Clay days will be on Mondays from 1-3pm: Week 3, June 23; Week 4, June 30; Week 8, July 28; and Week 9, Aug 4.  Scutpure and other types of clay will be taught in the other weeks of camp.

Scholarship Applications

Scholarships are awarded based on financial need.  Please download and fill out the Summer Camp Scholarship Application and mail or fax (941-366-0585) or email the completed application, current tax return and a teacher letter to Ali Lambert. Only completed applications will be considered by the scholarship committee.  The last day to submit an application is Friday June 6, 2014.

Adopt-A-Camper!  Send a student(s) to Summer Camp

Please donate to the scholarship fund that has been established to give kids, who are unable to afford the fees for camp, an opportunity to explore their creativity. A full scholarship for one camper for one week is $195. Your contribution is tax-deductible and can make a difference in a child's summer.
