Discover the exhilarating birth of modern art in this engaging three-class series exploring the early years of French Impressionism. From Édouard Manet’s daring breakthroughs in painting modern life to the luminous plein air masterpieces of Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro, and the dynamic urban scenes of Edgar Degas, participants will trace how a bold group of artists revolutionized painting with vibrant color, broken brushwork, and the fleeting effects of light. Culminating in the landmark 1874 exhibition where critics mockingly dubbed them “Impressionists,” this series offers Sarasota art lovers fresh insights into one of the most joyful and transformative moments in art history.
Historian Randa Privett holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies and taught for more than a decade at universities in Washington, D.C., including George Washington University and American University. Her work has been supported by NEH-funded projects, and she's presented research at the Library of Congress
