Our weekly classes provide a structured, progressive learning experience designed to build skills and confidence over time. Led by experienced instructors, each class encourages artistic growth while fostering creativity, community, and exploration across a variety of mediums and techniques.

New! Creative Practice
Creative Practice offers relaxed evening art-making sessions designed for all experience levels. Each gathering features a guided project in a welcoming, social atmosphere, with all materials and supplies included, making it easy to explore new techniques, connect with others, and enjoy the creative process without the commitment of a multi-week class.
Members-Only Open Studios provide dedicated time and space to create independently alongside fellow artists in a welcoming, collaborative environment. With no formal instruction, participants work at their own pace while sharing ideas and inspiration with peers. Offerings include figure drawing, painting and mixed media, collage, photography, and more.

What symbols describe you? Have you ever thought about expressing your experiences through images? Artists have long used symbols to express emotions, memories, dreams, and the unconscious. Inspired by Symbolist and Surrealist artists, we'll explore how objects, symbolism and landscapes can communicate experiences. Through observation, prompts, and experimentation, students will develop drawing skills while learning to transform ideas into visual form. Working with graphite, charcoal and perhaps colored pencil, we'll use drawing techniques that encourage careful observation and intuitive image-making, helping each student develop a unique visual language.

Seasoned artists or complete novices will learn from these classes. Students can bring their own supplies or use the instructors for a nominal fee. First and foremost, there are no mistakes in this class that can’t be fixed and there are no dumb questions either.

Most shooting will be done outside class time.
The Plate Era
In this class we will discuss and find visual inspiration from the earliest days of the medium, when photographs were made with heavy glass and metal plates. Emphasis will be on understanding the foundational practice of photography, and how to incorporate a traditional look and feel to a modern image through capture and editing.

Why buy a plushie if you can make one? If you have zero experience, you are in the right place. We are diving headfirst into Amigurumi—the Japanese art of turning a ball of yarn into pure joy. Leonie will guide you through the knots, the loops, and the laughs until you are bringing your very own pocket-sized buddies to life. If you can tie your shoelaces, you can do this!
We will be mastering the slip knot, the chain stitch, and the foundational single crochet to begin with. We will add half double crochet, working in rows and turning, to finish our first project. We will then learn how to work in circles, which is how every great Amigurumi begins its life. At the end of this course, crochet patterns will make sense and no longer look like a secret government code.

Block Printing using EZ Cut Soft Linoleum

Join award-winning artist Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern for a fun and easy introduction to relief printmaking using EZ Soft Cut linoleum blocks. In this four-week class, students will create a design, carve, proof, and print a short edition using water-based inks. Experimentation with different inks, inking techniques and hand coloring, paper selection, and multiple block printing will be discussed, as well as ideas for professional quality presentation.
Printing ink is difficult to remove from clothing. The Art Center has aprons that can be borrowed to wear during class, but sometimes things can get messy! Please dress accordingly.

Introduction to Thread Sketching with Your Sewing Machine, Textile Art

Did you know your sewing machine can draw? Thread sketching — also known as free-motion embroidery — transforms your machine into an expressive mark-making tool, allowing you to "sketch" directly onto fabric with thread. In this workshop, students will learn the foundational skills and best practices of this versatile technique, including materials selection, machine setup, and the fundamentals of building a composition in thread. No prior free-motion embroidery experience is required — just a willingness to let go of the presser foot and play. The workshop concludes with two completed projects: a single thread color sketched piece and a three-dimensional formed object that demonstrates the sculptural possibilities of the technique.

Introduction to Neurographic Art

This workshop introduces participants to Neurographic Art, an intuitive creative process inspired by Neurographica® — a method that combines elements of psychology, neuroscience, mindfulness, and art through flowing lines and organic forms. Developed as a visual approach to creative thinking and self-expression, Neurographica explores the connection between drawing, perception, and the way the brain forms patterns and associations.
In the first session, participants will learn the foundations of neurographic drawing, including the signature flowing lines, rounded intersections, abstract compositions, and the principles behind the Neurographica method. Through guided exercises, students will explore how simple marks and shapes can evolve into expressive visual compositions.
In the second session, participants will create a personal artwork of their choice — such as a portrait, landscape, or any other meaningful image — and blend it with neurographic lines and abstract elements. Figurative and abstract forms will gradually merge together, allowing recognizable images to transform into layered, flowing compositions where lines, shapes, and imagery interact organically. The workshop encourages experimentation, intuition, and creative exploration in a relaxed and supportive environment.

In this hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop, participants will create a one-of-a-kind framed artwork using a layered painting and collage process. Participants will explore color, texture, and composition by creating two abstract paintings—one as an underpainting and one to be cut and reassembled into a dynamic grid design. Through guided demonstrations and step-by-step instruction, participants will learn simple color principles and creative techniques while experimenting freely. Each participant will leave with a finished framed artwork and the skills to continue exploring this process on their own.

There is something deeply satisfying about making a book entirely by hand — and this workshop proves you don't need a needle and thread to do it beautifully. Students will learn the versatile Reverse Piano Hinge binding structure, a no-sew technique that produces a distinctive accordion-style spine and a book that opens completely flat.
Working with decorative papers and covers of their choice, students will leave with a completed handmade book — and the knowledge to make many more. This workshop is ideal for journal makers, mixed media artists, travelers who want to create their own sketchbooks, and anyone who has ever wanted to make a beautiful book from scratch.

Advanced Thread Sketching Enhanced with Acrylic Paint, Fiber Art

Take your thread sketching practice to the next level by introducing acrylic paint as an expressive partner to your stitching. In this four-session workshop, students will work from a personal photograph to create a richly detailed, painted textile artwork that combines the linear quality of thread sketching with the color, depth, and atmosphere that only paint can provide. Skills covered include selecting and transferring a photograph onto fabric, building a thread-sketched rendering, and enhancing your work with acrylic paint to create dimension, shadow, and luminosity.
Previous experience with free-motion embroidery or thread sketching is recommended. Students will leave with a completed mixed-media textile artwork — and a technique that will permanently change the way they think about both painting and stitching.

Ikebana: The Japanese Art of Making Flowers Come Alive

Introduction to Neurographic Art

This workshop introduces participants to Neurographic Art, an intuitive creative process inspired by Neurographica® — a method that combines elements of psychology, neuroscience, mindfulness, and art through flowing lines and organic forms. Developed as a visual approach to creative thinking and self-expression, Neurographica explores the connection between drawing, perception, and the way the brain forms patterns and associations.
In the first session, participants will learn the foundations of neurographic drawing, including the signature flowing lines, rounded intersections, abstract compositions, and the principles behind the Neurographica method. Through guided exercises, students will explore how simple marks and shapes can evolve into expressive visual compositions.
In the second session, participants will create a personal artwork of their choice — such as a portrait, landscape, or any other meaningful image — and blend it with neurographic lines and abstract elements. Figurative and abstract forms will gradually merge together, allowing recognizable images to transform into layered, flowing compositions where lines, shapes, and imagery interact organically. The workshop encourages experimentation, intuition, and creative exploration in a relaxed and supportive environment.

If written notice is given after the last day to withdraw (see education policy), the class/workshop cost (fee) will not be refunded. Art Center Sarasota understands that last minute emergencies, illnesses, or conflicts come up that cannot be controlled. Due to administrative and contract expenses on the part of the Art Center, we are not able to make exceptions.
